Alex in wonderland

April 16, 2014 By Chien-Shing Wu

this is a book that i have been writing for about a year, below i have an excerpt, (sadly, with caps)

”

In fairytales, princes are supposed to live in a magical lands, they’re supposed to go and conquer dragons and save princesses, but all I was doing was sitting on a window sill in my room drinking tea and staring out at englands pouring rain. I wanted to go out! To go on a fantastic adventure! I wanted to fly away. But as my father always says, “A prince has his responsibilities and must stay loyal to his country” I love my country, but really! I mean do they have to be so clingy!!

I heard the phone ring. It was probably the prime minister calling to tell me how the meeting with America went. I groaned as I got up and walked over to the table. “Hello, edward, you have to stop calling me so late at night I need sleep!” an unfamiliar voice interrupted me saying, “ Hi, this is Elanor from wonderland impressions company, would you like to buy our season special pumpkin pie cupcakes and blue apple cider?’’ I paused, why would they be selling this at one o’clock in the morning? And blue apple cider? Yuck! But, it was woerth a try ” umm you know what? I think I’ll try some, just add it to my dads tab the card number is 3458-” shhe cut me off before I couild finish“Ok prince Alex, have a great night!” The receiver clicked. How did she know I was a prince? “It was probably just your imagination, go to sleep” ,I told myself. I stumbled to the bed, got under the covers and immediately fell asleep.”

FOOD

April 16, 2014 By Julia Morgan

food is awesome, it helps us live also it is good at the same time…mostly. I don’t know why I can’t eat food all day…oh yeah, I don’t want to get a bypass surgery. Anyways it doesn’t matter what kind of food you have, it’s usually good as long as you have it prepared correctly.
It can be under-cooked and don’t make it bland, add some spices up in der to jazz it up.

Wednesday Recap

April 16, 2014 By CB Smith-Dahl

Today started with some lego construction with CB and Mariah in the morning and then moved to a hands on writing/blogging exercise led by Valerie. These led to some really great blog posts like this one about legos and this one about the uni-cat (a distant cousin of both the uni-mermaid and the uni-tato).

After a lovely sandwich lunch with cucumber salad, we learned all about how bees & butterflies help Oakland’s parks and gardens from Tora and Terry of the Pollinator Posse. Then Bacilia showed us samples of her work as a professional architect.

As always, our day ended with some of us working on the blog, while others built and destroyed in Minecraft.

See you tomorrow!

Legos are Sexist

Legos are Sexist

Well, all the “Lego Friends” sets are marketed  to girls and are all purple and pink. Complete with atomically incorrect super slim, curvy dolls, as opposed to the Lego characters in other sets, which, last time I checked where gender-neutral squares. Only 21% of identifiably gendered Lego figures are female, so there s a bias there, too.

IMG_1458 Here is a news article from LA times on the figures. Lego’s company statement, that the sets were based on feedback from girls and not necessarily meant for only girls, is here. So, thoughts?

Art Project

Art Project

We designed and printed scarves with photosensitive ink. First, we drew designs on clear plastic. Then, we covered the part of the scarf we wanted to dye with photosensitive ink. Then we stuck the plastic with our designs onto the ink, and left the scarves in the sun for 10-20 minutes. We washed off the ink and had designs on our scarves!
